Ironically, The Quantum Suicide of Sophie Miller started as a screenplay for a short film back in 2008, when now-award-winning writer Matthew Marcus was still a student at the University of Virginia. That script was later completely re-written as a one-act play, which Marucs presented to eventual producer Darrell Poe, who serves on the board of Prince William Little Theatre in Manassas, Virginia. Once they committed to putting on a production of the one-act, they assembled a cast and crew. After a couple months rehearsing, pulling set designs together, planning, logistics - all the work that goes into a production - they and their new cast finally hit the road to put their show in front of an audience. They drove over four hours to Smithfield, Virginia, where there was an opening in a one act festival, for just one performance--only one shot to see if a sophisticated drama overflowing with complex scientific and philosophical ideas hinging on a bizzare intrepretation of theoretical quantum physics would resonate with people. Everyone was worried that the audience wouldn't follow the story and that they would reject the show.
They were wrong to worry. The first one-act performance of The Quantum Suicide of Sophie Miller was a huge succcess, winning a host of awards in nearly every category in which they competed. Alexia Poe, the shows lead actress, even won the Thespian Choice award, voted-on by her peer actors, for her portrayal of title character Dr. Sophie Miller.
Three other successful stage productions followed, including staged readings in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Los Angeles, California. Just over a year later, Marcus rewrote the play back into a screenplay and he and Darrell presented the script to Williamsburg-area filmmaker Kevin G. Bender, with whom Marcus had worked previously on The Receipt (2008) and The Artist (2009). Bender agreed to put his full support and the resources of his production company, RiverBend Films, behind the endeavour to bring The Quantum Suicide of Sophie Miller to the silver screen.
Many of the acclaimed members of the stage production return to the feature-film version of The Quantum Suicide of Sophie Miller, including award-winning actress Alexia Poe (Dr. Sophie Miller), critically-acclaimed actress Aimee Snow (Alice Miller), and award-winning actor Carl Nubile (Dr. Charles Winkley). Also returning are a number of RiverBend Films veterans who have worked with Bender on previous productions, including the critically-acclaimed The Receipt. Critically-acclaimed composer and award-winning musician Kyle Ringgenberg returns to score The Quantum Suicide of Sophie Miller, having scored both The Receipt and The Artist for RiverBend Films. Zachary Pruckowski, veteran production sound mixer from The Receipt and The Artist also returns, along with Diane Worden, who served as graphic artist on The Artist and will be the production designer, and Ashley Kinney, the producer of The Artist who will serve as co-producer and unit production manager on The Quantum Suicide of Sophie Miller. New members of the cast include Larry Keeling (Bill Miller) and Anthony Carchietta (David) and new additions to the design team include award-winning makeup artist Dani Fant, art director Shannon Skodacek and director of photography Rebecca Samuels. Darrell Poe will produce the film version and Matthew Marcus will serve as an executive producer alongside RiverBend Films co-founder and C.E.O. Kevin G. Bender.
